Obama has announced a new Clean Power Plan (CPP) for the US that aims to tackle climate change. The president called the plan the “biggest, most important step,” that has been taken in the direction of combating this problem. The CPP looks to cut greenhouse gas emissions from current US power stations to nearly a third within at least 15 years. The new plan instead emphasizes the significance of solar power, wind, and other renewable energy sources. Obama told the public that he was “convinced [that] no challenge [would provide] a greater threat to the future of the planet” than the issue of climate change. But, promises of wanting a greener tomorrow are quite empty coming from a man who is responsible for initiating a variety of wars overseas, and these military endeavors contribute environmental damage on a tremendous scale.
“The environment has long been a silent casualty of war and armed conflict. From the contamination of land and the destruction of forests to the plunder of natural resources and the collapse of management systems, the environmental consequences of war are often widespread and devastating,” - UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon
To be clear, the man who flies around in his private jet and who travels everywhere with a convoy of countless gas-guzzling SUVs; wants to talk to us about making greener choices. The plan is looking to cut carbon emissions from the power sector by at least 32% by 2030, compared with 2005 levels. And the same individual who is guilty of initiating drone strikes that result in the murder of hundreds of children and innocent men and women, is now telling us that taking a stand against climate change is a “moral obligation,” that we cannot ignore.
Obama said that “scaremongering” tactics from the energy industry won't work to stop the new proposal this time around, and he responded to claims that this new plan would kill jobs, by stating that he was dedicated to reinvesting in areas of the US that are known to be “coal country.” Hopefully he is more dedicated to following through with that promise, than he was with the countless other promises throughout his career that he has thus far failed to come-through on.
As part of the new plan, each US state will have its own emission-cutting goal that is assigned to it, and the state will be required to submit a proposal to the Environmental Protection Agency on how it will attempt to go about meeting that target. The White House has declared that this new plan is “the starting gun for an all-out climate push,” which we can expect to heat-up later this year when the Pope comes to the US in the fall for his much anticipated visit. Hillary Clinton also confirmed that if elected to replace Obama, she too would defend the plan and pursue its goals.
