Growing Number Of Citizens Are Awakening To The Two-Party Failure

A new poll reveals that Americans are abandoning political parties at an increasing rate, with roughly 40 percent now saying that they refer to themselves as independent. Loyalty to the Democrats and Republicans has continued to weaken for several years now, as more people continue to awaken to the realization these political representatives might not have their best interest at heart. The U.S. has continued to drift far away from liberty and closer toward centralization, with a recent study identifying the US as an oligarchy rather than the Constitutional Republic for which it was established to be.

Back in April of 2014, Princeton University published a study which found that political representatives in the US might be favoring economic elites over the civil liberties of the citizenry. The study found that “economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.” Later in the year, another piece came out by a Tufts University professor, which blasted the current state of American democracy. The critique criticized the current government for its lack of accountability; showing virtually none at all.

“There's the [government] we elect, and then there's the one behind it, steering huge swaths of policy almost unchecked. Elected officials end up serving as mere cover for the real decisions made by the bureaucracy,” said Tufts University's Michael Glennon. “Vote all you want. The secret government won't change,... the people we elect aren't the ones calling the shots,” said Glennon.

The recent Gallup Poll revealed that for the last three years, at least 40 percent of respondents said that they identified as independent. Twenty-nine percent said that they were Democrats and only 26 percent said that they were republicans. When it comes to the Democrats, this response marks the lowest for the party in Gallup's 65 years of asking about party identification. The previous low for the Democrats was at 30 percent for the same poll. “The percentage of US adults identifying as political independents has recently reached levels never seen before,” according to a Gallup spokesman in analyzing the recent study.
