Fighting Terror: Authorities In France Look To End Tor And Free Wi-fi

Following the recent terror attacks that took place in Paris, the French government is looking to forbid and block the use of the Tor anonymity browser within its nation. According to French newspaper Le Monde, the plan to block Tor and forbid free wi-fi was revealed from an internal document that originates from the Ministry of Interior. The document allegedly details two proposed pieces of legislation on the matter.

Specifically, it appears that the government is looking to block or forbid communications for the Tor network entirely, as well as forbid free and shared wi-fi connections during any state of emergency. According to Le Monde, the legislation could be presented as early as of January 2016. Some have questioned the legality of the move, and whether or not the attempt to block or forbid Tor would be Constitutional or not.

For now, the French authorities have initiated a three-month lock-down in the country after the recent attacks took place in Paris. France quickly closed its borders and extended new powers for the next few months that allows them to suspend due process. They now possess the powers to place people under house arrest without any trial, they have the authority to block any websites that they might deem to be a threat, and they can search individuals in their home without a warrant. It didn't take long for the state to respond to the attacks in a way that would infringe the rights of many innocent people who had nothing to do with the attack.

After the attacks in Paris took place, authorities endlessly demonized encryption as the supposed method for which the attackers were able to communicate. However, upon investigation it turns out that this may not be the case and many have suggested that the main method of communication for the attackers was via unencrypted SMS messages. But this isn't the first time that the state has aimed at decreasing methods for which people can engage anonymously online. Many have criticized the government's moves to use the Paris attacks in an effort to justify or push through their previous agenda.
